Where did chess originate?+
Chess originated in northern India around the 6th century CE as a game called Chaturanga. It spread to Persia (where it was called Shatranj), then through the Islamic world to Europe, evolving significantly along the way.
Who was the first World Chess Champion?+
Wilhelm Steinitz became the first officially recognized World Chess Champion in 1886 after defeating Johannes Zukertort in a match. Steinitz held the title until 1894 when he lost to Emanuel Lasker.
Who is the greatest chess player of all time?+
While subjective, most experts consider Garry Kasparov and Magnus Carlsen as the two strongest players ever. Kasparov dominated for 20 years (1985-2005), while Carlsen achieved the highest rating in history (2882) and held the World Championship from 2013 to 2023.
How old is chess?+

What is en passant in chess?+
En passant (French for "in passing") is a special pawn capture. When a pawn advances two squares from its starting position and lands beside an enemy pawn, the enemy pawn can capture it as if it had only moved one square. This must be done immediately on the next move.
