Biography

Alexander Sergeyevich Morozevich was born on July 18, 1977, in Moscow, Russia. He is one of the most creative and unconventional grandmasters of the modern era.

Morozevich has spent time in the world top 5 and was a two-time Candidates qualifier. His peak rating of 2762 placed him among the absolute elite.

What made Morozevich special was his utterly original approach. While most elite players followed mainstream theoretical paths, Morozevich played the Chigorin Defense to the Queen's Gambit (1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nc6), the Alapin Sicilian as Black, and other unusual systems. His games were unpredictable and exciting.

He won the Russian Championship twice (2007, 2014) and had outstanding results in major international tournaments, including Biel (won multiple times) and the Tal Memorial.
