Bled 1931
Alekhine at his peak. The World Champion scored 20.5/26, finishing 5.5 points ahead of Bogoljubov in one of the most dominant performances of the 20th century.
Unstoppable
After his masterpiece at San Remo 1930, Alekhine produced an even more dominant performance at Bled 1931. In a round-robin of 14 players, he scored 20.5/26 (15 wins, 11 draws, no losses), finishing 5.5 points ahead of Bogoljubov. The margin of victory was extraordinary for such a strong field, which included Tartakower, Nimzowitsch, and other elite players.
San Remo 1930 and Bled 1931 together represent the pinnacle of Alekhine's career. He would never again produce performances of such sustained dominance. Personal problems, his difficult divorce, and increasing alcohol consumption gradually eroded his play, culminating in his shocking loss of the World Championship to Max Euwe in 1935.
