Bugojno 1978
Karpov's statement tournament. The World Champion dominated a stellar field to prove that his title was earned, not merely inherited by Fischer's forfeiture.
Proving the Doubters Wrong
When Karpov became World Champion in 1975 after Fischer refused to defend, many questioned whether he deserved the title. His tournament victories throughout the late 1970s silenced the critics. At Bugojno 1978, he produced a dominant performance against a field that included most of the world's top players, winning with a convincing score and demonstrating the iron positional control that would define his career.
The tournament was one of a series of strong super-tournaments held in Yugoslavia during this era, which also included events in Skopje, Bugojno, and Niksic. Yugoslavia, as a non-aligned socialist state, was able to attract both Western and Soviet players, creating some of the strongest fields of the Cold War era.
