Moscow Super-Tournaments

The historical epicenter of Soviet chess power. Moscow has hosted more important tournaments than any other city, from the 1925 event that inspired the film Chess Fever to the Alekhine Memorial events.

The Soviet Showcase

Moscow was the capital of chess for most of the 20th century. The 1925 Moscow tournament, won by Bogoljubov ahead of Lasker and Capablanca, was one of the strongest events of its era and inspired the classic Soviet film "Chess Fever." The 1935 and 1936 Moscow tournaments marked Botvinnik's emergence as a world-class player. The 1967 tournament featured a young Fischer. The Alekhine Memorial events honored the legacy of the fourth World Champion. Each tournament reflected the priorities and politics of the Soviet chess machine.
