FIDE's 2005 World Championship was held as a double-round robin tournament with eight players in San Luis, Argentina. Veselin Topalov dominated from start to finish, scoring 6.5/7 in the first cycle (five wins, two draws) to build an insurmountable lead. He finished with 10/14, 1.5 points ahead of Anand and Svidler. His +6 score (six more wins than losses) was extraordinary for a championship event.

The victory made Topalov FIDE World Champion, though the "classical" title was held by Kramnik. The two titles would be unified the following year in the controversial Elista match.
