Koneru Humpy
India's first female chess superstar. A former prodigy who became the youngest woman to earn the Grandmaster title, challenged Hou Yifan for the World Championship, and won the Women's World Rapid Championship in 2019.
The Indian Prodigy
Koneru Humpy was born on March 31, 1987, in Gudivada, Andhra Pradesh, India. Her father, an ardent chess enthusiast, recognized her talent early and devoted himself to her training. At 15, she became the youngest woman to earn the Grandmaster title, breaking Judit Polgar's record (later surpassed by Hou Yifan). This achievement announced India as a rising force in women's chess.
The 2011 Challenge
Koneru won the 2010 Women's Candidates tournament to earn the right to challenge Hou Yifan for the World Championship. The match, played in Tirana, Albania, in November 2011, was disappointing for Koneru. Hou outplayed her strategically, winning 5.5-2.5 with two wins and five draws. Koneru's positional approach could not crack Hou's deep preparation and universal style.
Redemption in Rapid
Though she never challenged again for the classical World Championship, Koneru won the Women's World Rapid Championship in 2019, proving her enduring class. She took a break from chess in 2016-2017 to have a child, then returned to elite competition, balancing motherhood with competitive chess in a way that inspired a generation of Indian female players.
