Hou Yifan
Four-time Women's World Champion, the strongest active female player, and the woman who came closest to following Judit Polgar's path into open competition.
The Prodigy
Hou Yifan was born on February 27, 1994, in Xinghua, China. She learned chess at age three and showed exceptional talent from the beginning. By age 12, she was the youngest Chinese Women's Champion ever. At 14, she became the youngest Women's World Championship finalist. At 16, she became the youngest Women's World Champion in history, a record that still stands.
Her playing style combines deep positional understanding with sharp tactical alertness. She is equally comfortable in quiet strategic struggles and complex tactical melees, a versatility that has made her nearly unbeatable in women's events. Her endgame technique is particularly celebrated, drawing comparisons to Capablanca and Carlsen.
Beyond Women's Chess
Like Judit Polgar before her, Hou has increasingly gravitated toward open competition. She has competed in elite mixed tournaments and scored victories over strong male grandmasters. In 2019, she reached the Candidates Tournament, the final qualifying stage for the overall World Championship, coming closer than any woman since Polgar to challenging for the absolute title.
Hou has also pursued academic interests, studying at Oxford University and the University of Memphis. Her intellectual range reflects the same versatility that characterizes her chess: she is not merely a chess player but a polymath who happens to excel at the royal game.
