Dommaraju Gukesh
The youngest World Chess Champion in history. At 18, Gukesh dethroned Ding Liren and heralded a new era for Indian chess.
Chennai's Second Son
Dommaraju Gukesh was born on May 29, 2006, in Chennai, India, the same city that produced Viswanathan Anand. His father was a doctor and his mother a microbiologist. Gukesh learned chess at age seven and showed prodigious talent almost immediately, earning the grandmaster title at 12 years and 7 months, one of the youngest ever.
Gukesh's playing style is characterized by aggressive, creative chess combined with solid technical skills. Unlike many prodigies who rely on tactical tricks, Gukesh has shown a mature understanding of positional chess that belies his age. His opening preparation is deep and creative, and his endgame technique has improved rapidly.
The Youngest Champion
Gukesh qualified for the 2024 World Championship match against Ding Liren by winning the Candidates Tournament in Toronto at age 17, the youngest ever to do so. The championship match, played in Singapore, was closely contested. Gukesh won the final game after Ding blundered in a drawn endgame, taking the match 7.5-6.5 and becoming, at 18 years and 206 days, the youngest World Chess Champion in history, breaking a record that had stood since Kasparov in 1985.
The victory was a watershed moment for Indian chess. Anand had opened the door; Gukesh walked through it. India, a country with no significant chess tradition before Anand, now had two World Champions and the strongest generation of young players in the world. The baton had passed from Europe to Asia, from the old chess world to the new.
"I want to be the best player in the world. That has been my dream since I started playing." โ D. Gukesh
